Qigong was "invented" in the s by members of the Chinese medical establishment who were worried that China's traditional healing arts would be lost as China modeled its new socialist health care system on Western biomedicine. In the late s, Chinese scientists "discovered" that qi possessed genuine scientific qualities, which allowed qigong to become part of China's drive for modernization. With the support of China's leadership, qigong became hugely popular in the s and s, as charismatic qigongqigong boom, the first genuine mass movement in the history of the People's Republic.

Falun Gong founder Li Hongzhi started his own school of qigong in , claiming that the larger movement had become corrupted by money and magic tricks. Li was welcomed into the qigong world and quickly built a nationwide following of several million practitioners, but ran afoul of China's authorities and relocated to the United States in In his absence, followers in China began to organize peaceful protests of perceived media slights of Falun Gong, which increased from the mid-'90s onward as China's leaders began to realize that they had created, in the qigong boom, a mass movement with religious and nationalistic undertones, a potential threat to their legitimacy and control.

No other qigong system is able to offer Consummation and cultivation of the Main Spirit which is the most difficult. If the spirit is going to trapped inside a rock it will need thousands of years until it will be able and liberate again at least on this dimension. From the exercises to the books and lectures everything is offered for free to the practitioner! I would like to remind something here, what Master Li stated, that not everyone is predestined to embrace Falun Gong.

Perhaps that is the case too for the author of this book, as he finds difficult to believe the metaphysical messages of Master Li about the Cosmos, the true science and the cohesive origin of spirit and matter.

I have myself read that interview prior reading this book. This is my conclusion: And by real things the Master distinguishes the illusions of this world and the Real World that exist in the Heavens.

Falun Gong Takes Over New York

As I stated earlier, the change of mood is noticeable as one progresses from the beginning to the middle and then to the end of the book. That was very valuable information and a part of the book that I truly enjoyed reading.

Falun Gong and the Future of China

I had a rather positive impression as well from the historical information presented about the redemptive societies, the modern history of qigong, the experiences of the practitioners themselves. The part with the persecution and the documented material with the massive transplants was shocking. I would like to add that the book is thematically well structured, well organized and well written.

With emphasis though to the historical importance of what Falun Gong is to the eyes of the author , leaving almost no space for the true inner essence of a supreme spiritual cultivation which is one of a kind for the 21st century, something that has not been taught in the past on this Earth in that magnitude. Falun Gong —as Master Li himself also stated— is not to be embraced nor truly perceived by everyone as what it is; instructions to enlightenment and Consummation.

Neither is Falun Gong an isolated case, for during the late 80s and 90s, qigong was extremely popular and again Owenby links the history of the qigong boom to that of Falun Gong and shows how the two are related. His work also contains illuminating first-hand research with practitioners in the Chinese diaspora in America, whose socio-ethnological circumstances counter those popularised by the Chinese government: Falun Gong practitioners are not at least in America poor, uneducated farmers but well-educated middle class citizens.

Owenby also examines the on-going struggle between Falun Gong and the Chinese state, charting it from the demonstration outside Zhongnanhai on April 25th to Altogether, this book is a rare objective account of Falun Gong - something academia needs to counter the exaggerations from not only the Chinese government but also from Falun Gong itself. He sympathises with the Falun Gong practitioners detained and tortured and ultimately notes that Falun Gong, like other redemptive societies and religious movements in China have a great power to mobilise popular support and deeply unsettle and often provoke the Chinese state to grave action.
