The Way of Story: The Craft & Soul of Writing
I've also had the privilege to take one of Catherine's workshops. I have 2 copies - 1 to travel with when I write and 1 for my library. Reading The Way of Story is like having a talk with a trusted, intelligent and interesting friend. The writing style is friendly, easy to read, and inspiring. The personal anecdotes and quotations Jones uses to illustrate her points are brilliantly chosen. Jones shares lessons learned in becoming an award-winning writer. I really enjoyed reading this book. It's not like other writing books, full of tecniques and formulas.
What I liked about the book is it mainly focused on trusting your heart and point of view as a writer. You have to dig deep in yourself to understand why you write and when you can umderstand why you write you'll inderstand character and dialogue, etc.
This book is great for the beginner who has no experience in writing, especially if you are into mythology and writing. For the pro you might no find a lot of this new but it really does uplift the writers spirits. I had my problems with the book. I found myself skimming in some places. First half she name dropped so many times and often repeated the same names and how she knew them over and over. Thankfully she stopped doing that after a while.
The best part about the book for me is the quotes from pheromone writers she used. I'm have way through this book and it is wonderful. I highly recommend this book. See all 30 reviews. Amazon Inspire Digital Educational Resources. A good how-to with lots of basic advice, tilted a bit toward screenwriting. What sets this book apart is its integrated approach as far as writing from the heart, or what Jones called the Soul in the Jungian sense. A good book for writers that maybe overthink things or write too much from the head which is why I read it. Although the author has clearly had many fascinating experiences in film and theater, there was a bit too much name dropping for me.
A screenwriting oriented creative writing book. I was a little disappointed. Book was basically a rehash of basic writing principles.

About Catherine Ann Jones. After playing major roles in over fifty plays on and off-Broadway, she became disappointed by the lack of good roles for women and wrote a play, "On the Edge", about Virginia Woolf and her struggle with madness in a world gone mad, Hitler and WWII. The play won a National Endowment for the Arts Award. Her books, "The Way of Story:
